About
The human dimension of architecture holds a simple yet profound importance in fundamentally informing the spaces we create and inhabit; shaping not only our physical surroundings but also the quality of our daily lives. Through form, material, color, light, and shadow—as well as through its social, cultural, and environmental performance—architecture has the unique capacity to enrich experience, deepen understanding, and positively influence the ways we think, feel, and connect with one another.
I believe that architecture should reflect and stand as a witness to its time. It should give form to the values and aspirations of the present while enriching the particularity and richness of our lived experiences. Architecture acts as a spatial lens, sharpening and intensifying our awareness of the world around us and revealing new ways of seeing and inhabiting it. It should respond thoughtfully to its place, celebrating both the authenticity and specificity of its setting while fostering a deeper appreciation for the beauty, diversity, as well as fragility of the natural environment.
Born and raised in the Hawaiian Islands, I learned from a very early age the importance and value of cultural diversity, environmental stewardship, as well as the necessity of a living in a balanced coexistence. After earning a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Washington State University and a Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design degree from Columbia University in New York City, I had the privilege of collaborating professionally with the atelier of Pritzker Prize-winning architect Álvaro Siza in Porto, Portugal; the internationally recognized practice of Steven Holl Architects in New York City; and the studio of John Ronan Architects in Chicago. Prior to establishing my own practice, I served as Director of Residential Design at Shubin+Donaldson Architects in Los Angeles.
I welcome opportunities to collaborate with forward-thinking clients, builders, consultants, craftspeople, artists, and communities who share a belief that architecture can contribute meaningfully to human well-being and are interested in working together to create places of lasting beauty, purpose, and balance.
Bradford Kelley, Architect.
